Today I watched the You Tube Clip By David Steindl Rast - Today is a Gift.
His opening comments reminded me of my partner who say's "live for each day."
Brother David tells us to "open our eyes." (2016) I went for a walk around the Senior School and found the above framed poster on the wall. I don't know how many times I have passed it. Today is the first time that I read it. I wonder how many students have read it and if they have thought about the message.
I was required to discipline a Year 11 student who had ignored an instruction that I gave him earlier in the week; to park his car off the school grounds due to dangerous driving that had been observed by a teacher . The student is known for his poor attitude and 'thumbing his nose at teachers'. Brother David said "look into the eyes of the people, they all have stories." (2016) I looked into the eyes of this student and wondered what made him defiant and arrogant.
In my dealings with him, I treated him with respect. I listened to his excuse and we talked about honesty, respect and positive relationships. I told him that I would be his Year Level Coordinator next year and there was a 90% chance that he would be in my class. We talked about the fact that he would make mistakes next year but I would always listen to his side of the story and treat him fairly. I also indicated that if he was given a consequence, it would be reasonable and then we would move on. (live for each day)
He was responsive and apologetic, I didn't see any of the arrogance and defiance that he normally displays. He was grateful that I hadn't escalated the issue like so many teachers do. He promised to move his car at lunchtime and then found me to tell me that he had. He also apologised for ignoring my earlier instruction and assured me that his car would be parked on the street for the remainder of the week as requested. I think that we are going to get on just fine next year.
I have learned that when students are treated with respect and situations are explained to them, they are usually very reasonable and compliant. I have often chuckled to myself when a student, that I have disciplined, has thanked me as they have left my office (gratitude).
"Let the gratefulness overflow with the blessings all around you then it will be a good day"
